The conversion of Float Glass to Toughened Safety Glass increases the strength of the glass up to five times. It also converts Normal Glass into Safety Glass as, when broken, it disintegrates into small, relatively blunt pieces, thus minimizing the risk of lacerations and other injuries. Tempershield® conforms to the following local and international safety standards:

Applications

Due to the unique qualities of toughened safety glass, it may be used in applications where float or laminated glass cannot, or should not be used i.e.

Design parameters and tolerances

Note: Cutting or drilling of holes to be undertaken prior to toughening. Bear in mind that the diameter of the hole should be at least the thickness of the glass. In addition, bear in mind that no processing of the glass can be done once the toughened process is complete. A minimum hole diameter of 6mm is recomended, even if the glass is less than 6mm thick.

Out of Square

Up to 2000mm longest dimension diagonal difference - 6mm. Above 2000mm longest dimension diagonal difference to be increased by 1mm for every 1000mm or part thereof, in addition to the first 2000mm.

Manufacturing limits for blowing (departure from flatness)

We have mentioned that, as a result of the toughening procces, perfectly flat glass cannot be produced. The blowing limits are dependent upon thickness, aspect ratio and size, among other factors. the folowing table details the required manufacturing limits.

Departure from flatness
Tolerences (mm)

On thickness, nominal 4,5 and 6mm 1mm per 200mm
On thickness, nominal 10mm 1mm per 300mm
On thickness, nominal 12mm and over 1mm per 300mm

Manufactured on a horizontal roller hearth furnace, normal Float Glass is heated to approximately 680° C then rapidly and uniformly cooled - ensuring high compressive stresses at the surface with balancing tensile stresses in the centre. Available in clear, tinted or reflective, it is manufactured in various thicknesses, as per the performance charts of the various products.
